Boating Fun Is A Family Affair
Several times we have met at a picnic area near a lake and we have to take turns going for a ride on our boat. Our family has grown in larger numbers now. The problem is that we are trying to get all the members of our family in one boat. What to do is the question that we have to deal with every time. We could use two boats, but then we have to agree on who goes with who. This is the debate every time we go boating when two boats are brought along.
Everyone wants to be together in the same boat. How are we going to solve this dilemma and come to an agreement on this. We would all fit on a pontoon. Right now there is the problem with the financial difficulty of buying a brand new pontoon. Looking at them, the expense is out of range, to be exact. Used pontoons are out there but the well taken care of ones sell so fast on a first come first serve basis. We had an eye on a nice one in the area, called on it and it was already sold just that fast. Other ones that are sitting around have damaged seats and ripped covers. These types of pontoons are ones that no one wants unless they are able to have the knowledge to repair them or the money to get them repaired. We have been dealing with this dilemma for a couple of years so we have almost given up again for this year.
In spite of all the dilemma about boating, we had a great time with part of out family having an outing for our July birthdays. We decided to have some of us go boating and have a picnic and use one of the boats we own. We went to the city Forest Lake, Minnesota. The picnic area is great and the access to the lake is user-friendly for skiing and tubing. Forest Lake is very popular for people to enjoy fireworks on the 4th of July. We brought a charcoal grill and had hamburgers, hotdogs and brats. Salads were brought by some family members and a daughter-in-law made a beautifully decorated birthday cake. We had a great time when only part of our family come to this event.
These are some things we think about when getting ready to go boating as a family:
Always be weather-wise: We always check local weather conditions before taking our boat ride; Radar on our cell phone helps in this area. We watch for darkening clouds, changing winds or sudden drops in temperature, to head for the shore, and playing it safe by getting off the water.
We always follow safety rules: Proper boating safety includes everyone having a life jacket. Everyone sits down in the boat and enjoys the ride. Being prepared for any possibility on the water is very important. We have 2 ores and 1 throw safety device in the boat. There is a fire extinguisher available. Make sure all lights are working. Following safety rules always makes a fun trip worry free.
Common Sense is important: One of the most important parts of boating safety is to use your common sense. Operating at a safe speed all the times, staying alert and watching out for large vessels, other watercraft, and being respectful of buoys and the other navigational aids in place for everyone’s safety.
Make sure more than one person on board has knowledge with the boat’s handling, operations, and general boating safety. Because if the navigator of the boat is injured or can’t operate the boat, it’s important to make sure someone else can follow the boating safety rules to get everyone back to shore safely.
Let other family members know where you are and how long you will be gone.
Put safety first and fun will follow.
